Life in Kornur Series Book 1, 2 & 3

A Literary & Social Fiction Series

Untouchable Lives (Book 1)

Untouchable Lives is a novella written as a series of vignettes that chronicle the daily lives of manual scavengers, sewer cleaners, cow skinners, cobblers, and fishermen, all untouchable inhabitants in the coastal village of Kornur, India.

Untouchability is a social evil that has been a part of Indian society for centuries. It is the practice of ostracizing a group of people deemed as untouchables due to their low caste in the rigid and dogmatic caste system.

These vignettes highlight the plight of the untouchables. They portray the daily discrimination faced by them, the humiliation they have to endure, the dreadful and inhumane jobs they still continue to do due to tradition, their innocent ambitions and desires, and the small things that make them happy. Simultaneously, they also show the gradual development of a backward and secluded coastal village slowly transforming into a city against the wishes of its inhabitants.

These stories are based on similar incidents that occur quite often even to this day and deal with the subjects of ostracization, class, caste, etc.

Untouchable Lives is the first novella in a literary and social fiction series. If you like the works of John Steinbeck or Toni Morrison, then you will love this book.
